The GraceKennedy (GK) Foundation’s scholarship programme will open from May 1 to July 15, 2017 and will provide more than $20 million in scholarships to students studying at tertiary-level educational institutions in Jamaica for the 2017/18 academic year.
In highlighting GraceKennedy’s commitment to education, Caroline Mahfood, executive director of the foundation, said there is a growing challenge for students to fund their tertiary education.
“We must play our part to meet that need. Supporting these bright, talented young people is an investment in Jamaica’s workforce, and we are pleased to be able to contribute towards their future,” Mahfood said.
The GraceKennedy Foundation will offer scholarships to students attending The University of the West Indies (UWI), the University of Technology, the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, and the Caribbean Maritime Institute.
Grateful for Scholarship
GraceKennedy/Jamaica Scholar 2016 recipient Avaughn Prendergast was grateful to have been chosen for the scholarship.
“This scholarship has completely turned around not only my life, but that of my family as well. It has alleviated the most severe financial stress faced by my family and has given us hope and peace of mind and made us all happier,” Prendergast said.
The first-year UWI undergraduate is urging all students interested in furthering their education not to give up and to apply for each and every available scholarship. He noted that before he received the call from the foundation, he had been turned down for five other scholarships.
“Being selected for this prestigious honour has taught me to have faith and persevere, as failure is guaranteed only when we desist from trying. The GK Foundation’s investment in my future and that of many other scholars means the world to me and is a beacon of hope for many persons in a situation similar to what mine had been,” he said.
Only online applications will be accepted. For criteria on the scholarships and to apply visit www.gracekennedy.com/gkfscholarships. Applications close on July 15, 2017. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an in-person interview.
The GraceKennedy Foundation was established in 1982, in celebration of GraceKennedy Limited’s 60th anniversary. GraceKennedy Foundation actively promotes well-being, primarily by supporting educational and environmental programmes and processes.
