OAS-University Partnerships Program for Education and Training The Organization of American States (OAS), through the Department of Human Development Education and Employment (DHDEE) and the University of the West Indies (UWI), through the OAS Partnerships Program for Education and Training (PAEC), are offering scholarships to qualified candidates of the Americas to participate in its master’s degree programs.


MODALITY: Onsite in Barbados, Jamaica or Trinidad & Tobago

DURATION: One (1) Year

DEADLINES: Program Admission – February 28, 2017 | Scholarship application – April 1, 2017

BENEFITS: The OAS and UWI will provide US$7,000 to cover tuition

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Please note that OAS-University scholarships are not offered for studies in one’s country of citizenship or permanent legal residence. Citizens and/or permanent legal residents of Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago will not be considered for these OAS scholarships at the University campus located in their country of citizenship or legal residence.

About The OAS-University of the West Indies (UWI)

The UWI established in 1948 initially as an external College of the University of London and made fully independent in 1962, is the oldest, fully regional institution of higher learning in the Commonwealth Caribbean. Supported by seventeen countries all current or former colonies of Great Britain, the University is committed to the development of the region through the training of its human resources, conducting research, delivering advisory services to governments as well as to the private sector and forging links with other institutions in the wider region and the rest of the world.

Scholarship Application Process 

To apply for this scholarship opportunity, you must submit a scholarship application Online through the OAS Fellowship Management System. You are required to upload the following documents where indicated in the online application form.

Please note that all supporting documents must first be combined into ONE PDF document before it can be uploaded in the application form. The application system does not allow for more than one document to be uploaded, hence the aforementioned request. Please be guided accordingly.


Scholarship Selection Criteria:

  1. The merits and overall credentials of the candidate, including his/her academic and professional background;
  2. Geographical distribution of the applicants, taking into account the greater needs of the smaller and relatively less developed economies;
  3. Applicants whose proposals portray the highest potential for impact upon return to their countries of origin; and
  4.  Gender diversity.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Student:

  1. This OAS-University scholarship will be formally awarded only after the selected awardees have signed an OAS/UWI Acceptance Form, in which the awardees formally accept the scholarship and agree to its terms and conditions.
  2. Refrain from activities that are inconsistent with the status of an OAS-University Scholarship recipient, abiding by the regulations referred to in this Acceptance Form.
  3. Comply with all the academic guidelines and admission requirements requested by UWI and submit to the updates of these guidelines and requirements made by the academic authorities at UWI.
  4. Comply with the provisions indicated in the “Financial responsibilities of awardees”
  5. To retain the scholarship, awardees should not have low academic performance (GPA must be at least equivalent to 3.0/4.0), due to absence from the program of study and/or course failure.
  6. The scholarship can be declined by the awardee before the start date of the program of study without financial penalties. However, if a student declines the scholarship after that date without proof of force majeur, the OAS and UWI may require the scholarship recipient to reimburse all funding granted to her/him with the scholarship at the time in which the declination is processed.
  7. Commitment to return to work in their sponsoring country or permanent legal residence in one of the OAS member states, or at an international organization, for at least the length of the duration of the scholarship. Failure to comply with this commitment, the GS/OAS and/or the UWI could seek reimbursement for the total value of the scholarship awarded.
