The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT or Monbukagakusho) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

As of the 2015 Japanese academic year, some 102,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954. As of May 1, 2015, there were 9,223 foreign students studying in Japan as Japanese government scholarship students.

Since 1994, the Government of Japan awarded Research (Graduate) Student Scholarships to 40 Jamaicans, 3 Belizeans and 2 Bahamians to pursue Master’s and Doctoral study in Japan. More recently, undergraduate Student Scholarship has become available to citizens of all three countries and College of Technology Student Scholarship to Jamaicans.

Graduate Scholarships (Research Students)

his scholarship is open to university graduates from Jamaica, Belize and The Bahamas, , and covers an 18 month – 2 year period of graduate research at Japanese universities. The study area must be in the same field as the applicant studied or is now studying, or a related field. Recipients may enter Master’s or Ph.D. program after passing the entrance examination given by the university concerned. The scholarship includes a half-year of Japanese language training for those who need Japanese language training. Applicants must be less than 35 years of age (born on or after April 2, 1983), and must be university graduates with a G.P.A. at least 2.8.

Timeline

  • April, 2017 … Applications open
  • May 26, 2017… Application deadline
  • June 2017… Examinations and Interviews for shortlisted candidates
  • July 2017… Notification of shortlisted candidates
  • July – August 31, 2017… Shortlisted candidates are required to directly contact the Japanese universities of his/her choice in order to obtain acceptance letters from three universities. Candidates are not allowed to contact Japanese universities beyond September 1.
  • January 2018… Notification of results
  • April/October 2018… Departure for Japan

Undergraduate Students

This scholarship is open to Jamaican, Bahamian and Belizean high school graduates and above who are planning to study in Japan, and covers a five years period of undergraduate studies including a one-year Japanese language program at a Japanese language school prior to attending a Japanese university as an undergraduate student. Recipients will receive a bachelor’s degree in Japan. Applicants must be between 17 to 21 years of age (must be born between (April 2, 1996 and April 1, 2001), and must have completed 12 years of education by March 2017 or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school. Applicants must have excellent grades for the last three years in high school.

College of Technology Students

This scholarship is open to Jamaican high school graduates and above and covers a four-year period of technical study in the following areas: civil engineering, architecture, electrical engineering, electronics, and others (please see the document which states Majors and Related Key Terms for Field of Study for further details). The scholarship includes a one-year Japanese language program at a Japanese Training College. It is available to high school graduates who are between 17 to 21 years of age (must be born between April 2, 1996 and April 1, 2001). Applicants must have excellent high school grades.
