As of next academic year, students of the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC Law) will be able to pursue postgraduate programme in law, specifically the Master of Laws (LLM), Postgraduate Diploma in Law, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Law.
The development represents a deepening of the relationship between UCC and the University of London (UoL), which currently features UCC Law offering teaching and supervision for the UOL Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme, as well as the UOL Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law, which is equivalent to the first year of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme.
UCC Law said in a release last week that the postgraduate programmes will give qualified candidates the opportunity, for example, to pursue studies that will lead them to become qualified attorneys within Jamaica, whilst also providing an internationally recognized master’s award, which is highly attractive to employers in a variety of disciplines.
“This makes it the perfect choice for students who want to keep their career options open for further advancement,” the institution said.
The UCC Law LLM programme aims to provide:
- advanced understanding of the specific fields of law offered;
- knowledge and understanding of the context in which laws operate;
- the skills needed to understand complex and advanced issues in law;
- advanced intellectual engagement with difficult legal problems; and
- opportunities to develop tools needed to undertake legal research;
The UCC Law Postgraduate Diploma in Law provides:
- entry in the UCC Law for degree holders in any discipline with second class honours OR masters degree holders OR postgraduate certificate holders

The Postgraduate Certificate in UCC Law allows:
- entry for degree holders in any discipline with any class or those with five years relevant experience, such as in accounting, banking, securities, insurance, police, shipping, or law.
“This expansion of University of London programmes on offer at UCC will further allow the UCC to accelerate and widen the higher education opportunities for the people of this country,” said Dr Winston Adams,group executive chairman of UCC.
“The UCC plays a critical role in Jamaica and the Caribbean by providing world-class education for the next generation of professionals, and our efforts will go a long way in achieving and advancing the university’s goals. We are especially proud to continue investing in the education and training of Jamaica’s new workforce. This relationship will continue to grow as Jamaica becomes the education and training hub for the rest of the Caribbean,” he continued.
UCC’s Executive Chancellor Professor Dennis J Gayle commented: “The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean is delighted that the University of London has endorsed the recommendation to grant UCC this initial approval to offer the postgraduate laws programme. Our institutions of higher education will now collaborate to enrich the learning experience of postgraduate University of London students who pursue the LLM degree, building upon a very positive inter-institutional relationship that began in 2005.”
Michael Davis, head of global policy analysis and development at UOL, commented on the UCC’s longstanding relationship with the University of London undergraduate law programme, noting that, “The University of London is proud of its extensive network of centres, such as UCC, that mediate and add value to the learning experience of its students worldwide. We are delighted that the UCC is expanding its portfolio of support for University of London students in Jamaica to postgraduate level, and we wish them every success in this initiative”.
The agreement was signed on March 15, 2018.
UCC is one of Jamaica’s largest privately held tertiary education institutions. It operating seven campuses in six parishes across island.
