The Jamaica 4-H Clubs through its Rio Tinto Scholarship Programme has given it commitment to clubite Delano Tucker to support him in his agricultural studies; as he begins his sixth form journey at the Guys Hill High School in St. Catherine.
The Jamaica 4-H Clubs has pledged to support further agricultural science studies for standout member and Guy’s Hill student Delano Tucker, whose story of academic excellence amid the grips of poverty has warmed the hearts of Jamaicans.
The 17-year-old, who has been a 4-H clubbite since grade nine and has participated in many of the organisation’s activities, is a sixth-former who scored passes in nine Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate subjects.
Moved by the family’s need, scores of Jamaicans, including celebrities, swarmed Springfield district on Wednesday to provide support. The massive crowd showered them with food and other gifts. The Tuckers, a family of four, had reportedly gone six months without meat, and they have no electricity or running water at their home.
Garfield Ewart, Jamaica 4-H Clubs’ director of field services, confirmed that Delano had applied to the Rio Tinto Scholarship Programme and was accepted. Ewart noted that once accepted at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE), his scholarship at that level would go into effect.

In a viral documentary-style video published by Street Driven.tv, Delano had expressed his desire to attend CASE, which is located in Passley Gardens, Portland. Delano’s sister, who also attends Guy’s Hill High, will also be encouraged to apply for the scholarship once she becomes eligible.
Ewart, in a press statement, disclosed that the Jamaica 4-H Clubs offers assistance for students starting at the high-school level (grade nine) with bus fare, exam fees, lunch, and other incidentals.
The scholarship programme, which has been in existence for more than 10 years, is geared at students like Delano with genuine needs and who come from challenging circumstances, said Ewart. Over the last academic year, approximately 360 scholarships have been provided to students from the secondary and tertiary levels.
The Rio Tinto Alcan Scholarship Programme is managed by the Jamaica 4-H Clubs, with funding provided through the Development Bank of Jamaica.
