The 2018 UCC Scholarships season is here! Let’s get started with the 2018 UCC Scholarships from the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean for new and enrolled students. The 2018 UCC Scholarships are open to students in any field of study offered by the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean local programmes only. All available scholarships have specific criteria for recipient applicants.

All interested students must have received an acceptance letter from the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean Registrar Office before an application for scholarship can be submitted. All 2018 UCC Scholarships documents and communications are to be sent to:

Application forms are available at 17 Worthington Avenue, Kingston 5, online, or any of their regional campusesStudents may also apply for bursaries ranging from $15,000 to $50,000. These bursaries are available for those students just leaving a secondary or vocational level of study and who have already been approved for admission by UCC to an undergraduate programme.

The descriptions of the 2018 UCC scholarships are found below. Scholarships are open to students in any field of study offered by the UCC (LOCAL programmes ONLY). All available scholarships have specific criteria for prospective applicants. The receipt of any award listed in this document is subject to the availability of funds.

2018 UCC Scholarships Deadlines and Notification

For all types of financial assistance, priority consideration will be given to applicants whose applications have been received and who have been admitted to UCC by June 30th . LATE applications will be accepted and considered for the second round of awards offered in January of each year.

Scholarships offered in January are limited, so every attempt should be made to submit applications in a timely manner. Applicants and parents of applicants are encouraged to estimate their previous year income data, if necessary. Applicants who file on time will be notified of their application status prior to the beginning of Fall registration.

Application Forms

All interested students in the 2018 UCC scholarships must have received an acceptance letter from the UCC Registrar’s Office before an application for scholarship can be submitted. Scholarship applications should be submitted DIRECTLY to the Student Affairs Department at 17 Worthington Avenue, Kingston 5. They can also be requested via email at scholarships@ucc.edu.jm Continuing UCC students wishing to be considered for the scholarships listed in this section must have a copy of their most recent grades to accompany the application form. All applicants MUST disclose and document all current income sources.

Students’ Expected Earnings

All students who apply for financial assistance are expected to either: (a) work and save a major portion of their earnings to apply against the coming academic year’s expenses; or (b) secure extra financing on their own to complement any scholarship received.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

All students receiving financial assistance are expected to establish and maintain satisfactory academic performance. For continued eligibility students must meet all of the following: (a) a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; (b) completion of 85% of all credit hours attempted; (c) meet all graduation requirements within the designated length of their respective degree programmes.

 Students may submit a written appeal to the Academic Affairs Office for reinstatement of their aid if exceptional conditions exist that prevents them from meeting the requirements.

Requirement for Proof of High School Graduation

Students must provide proof of high school graduation before aid may be disbursed (even though this may not be a requirement for admission). Proof should be attached to the application form. Major 2018 UCC Scholarships

First Generation

The applicant must be a first generation family member who is seeking higher education, demonstrate financial need and possess high academic performance. The applicant must provide a written essay of the importance of attaining higher education and the difference it will make in his/her life.

Winston I. Adams

Applicant must have attended Vere Technical School for at least two years and be a graduate of Vere Technical School. Each applicant must rank in the top ten academic performers of his/her graduating class.

Geraldine Adams’ Hope

Priority will be given to an applicant who is/has been a resident of a Girls’ Home in any of the parishes that UCC has a campus; be a high school graduate meeting normal matriculation requirements for any Certificate or Diploma/Degree programme, and must have recommendation letters from the Home and her high school. Applicant must provide a written essay describing her purpose for continuing her education and her plans for future development. If no such candidate applies, then young women facing extreme circumstances would be considered.

Helping Hand

The applicant must have had his/her education interrupted by temporary difficulties, and is unable to resume studies due to these circumstances. Applicant must demonstrate a financial need for assistance with their educational expenses. Preference will be given to heads of households and proven academic achievers.

Pathfinders

Applicant must be a recent high school graduate or UCC Diploma graduate; qualify for entry into a Lower Level Bachelors Degree Programme; demonstrate a high level of financial need; possess strong leadership skills and be previously involved in either UCC student programmes (or in the case of NEW students, strong involvement in community, or church activities).

Our Children/Our Future

Applicants must be children of UCC employees, recent high school graduates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and under the age of 21 years. UCC employees must have been hired for a minimum of two years and be in good employment standing.

Horace Roberts Ethics Award

 This scholarship is provided in memory of Horace Roberts, a former UCC Lecturer. It is available to applicants enrolling in the Human Resource Management Degree programme. Applicants may be new or continuing students, male or female, demonstrate high academic standards and financial need.

Trailblazers

Applicant should be a continuing student in a UCC Bachelors Degree Programme with a minimum GPA of 3.0; demonstrate financial need; possess leadership qualities and involvement in UCC student services and programs.

Janet Davis Lindsay Memorial

This scholarship is offered in memory of the former Dean of Local Programmes, Janet Davis Lindsay. This award is open to any applicant who is currently enrolled in a UCC local programme, and who (through no fault of his/her own), finds his/herself unable to complete payment of their degree programme. This award is meant to provide brief relief during a challenging period of time in a student’s life. Each applicant must be in good academic standing and must be able to provide proof of hardship.

Founders’ Day

The applicant must be a member of Andrew’s Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church. The applicant may be a new, a continuing or a re-entry student. Recipients will be assessed according to financial need and previous academic history. Awards are applied only to the tuition for local programmes.

 Inner-City Youth Opportunity

 Applicant must be enrolled in the Youth Leadership Training Programme hosted by the Jamaican Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Inner-City Development Committee; top male or top female in class; demonstrate strong leadership skills and community involvement. Preference will be given to candidates under the age of 21 years. Recipients are chosen based on exam grades and interview scores.

Melbourne Cricket Group

This scholarship will be awarded to members of the Melbourne Cricket Club. Applicants should be enrolled in an Associate Degree Programme with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Digicel’s Scholarship Award

 This scholarship will be awarded to 3rd and 4th year students pursuing degrees in the disciplines of Information Technology and Business Administration. Each student must have a GPA of 3.3; demonstrate participation in extracurricular activities and should not be the recipient of any other scholarship.

VMBS

Applicant should be a continuing student in a UCC Bachelors Degree Programme with a minimum GPA of 3.0; demonstrate financial need; possess leadership qualities and involvement in UCC student services and programmes.

 Paul Chavannes

Applicant must have been a member of COK for at least two years, or the child of a member of COK. The applicant must have completed at least one year of full time study or two years of part time study in a Management Studies degree programme at any Jamaican university.

CARRERAS

The applicant must be a Jamaican citizen with proof of birth. Applicant must also be an enrolled student in any locally recognized university. Each application must have a completed application form; an application letter; one certified copy of official academic transcript; a minimum GPA of 3.0; documented financial need; two references (one academic, one character).

Trevor Blake

 Applicants must be pursuing a degree in Management Studies, Banking Finance or Accounting. Each applicant must have been an employee of COK, a member of COK for at least two years, or the child of a member of COK.

First Heritage Co-operative Credit Union (FHCCU)

The applicant must be an active member of FHCCU for at least 6 months and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. The scholarship is open to final year Business Management/Business Administration students. Applicants must also be involved in community projects or exemplify leadership skills in clubs, associations or any other civic institution. Two (2) written references must be submitted to verify the applicant’s involvement in projects. The applicant must not be the recipient of any other current scholarships.

PATH

The applicant must be an individual in a PATH family and pursuing a Bachelors Degree programme at an accredited tertiary institution (universities and colleges). Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. The applicant must be in the 2nd to 4th year of study, and must have received a PATH benefit while in high school.

The Gift of Education

Friends and family members are able to purchase a voucher in order to assist an individual with the gift of education. Vouchers can be purchased for any amount and will be used towards the student’s tuition. The gift certificate is not redeemable for cash, but is transferable and valid for a period of two years from the date of issuance. It can only be used to offset expenses associated with a student’s account.
