The Soraya Amy Jackson Foundation Scholarship Program
About the donor
The Soraya Amy Jackson Foundation (SAJ Foundation) is a Connecticut, USA based non-for-profit that is funded in part by Milton (Phorein aka Mello Yellow) and Tara Jackson in memory of Soraya Amy Jackson and her fight against cancer.
Phorein is an international reggae artist, known for hits such as better pay and ready for this. He was known in the early 1990s as Mello Yellow.
The Corporation, via its various fundraising methods has establish and provided scholarships and grants for urban children and/or their caregivers, within the United States, the Caribbean, primarily Jamaica whose lives have been affected by cancer and/or poverty.
The SAJ Foundation Scholarship program, designed and administered by the team at ScholarshipJamaica, is in its second year of awards. Last year ten (10) exceptional students received one scholarship valued at $50,000 each. Eight (8) of these students will receive a renewed $50,000 award from the SAJ Foundation following submission of their academic reports.
This year, an additional two (2) first year college/university students will receive a scholarship award from the SAJ Foundation valued at $100,000 each. This represents the efforts of the foundation to dedicate an increasing funding capacity as the foundation grows.
The SAJ Foundation scholarship fund is fast growing through donations, fundraisers, contribution from the foundation founders and profit sharing from Jamaican business entities in Connecticut.

How to apply
Eligibility: Jamaican Nationals who will be enrolling as first year students in any local tertiary institution.
Applicants must submit a comprehensive essay of no more than 300 words on one of the following topics via email to SAJscholarship@gmail.com.
Students will be selected for the SAJF scholarship based on several key components:
- Completed application forms with the following documentations:
- Comprehensive essay responses to the essay question below.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from either teachers or principles.
- High School Transcript
- A completed resume
Essay Topics:
- What will you do after graduating college to contribute to the continuing growth of our Jamaica?
Awards will be based on academic performance in end of term exams (at least a GPA of 2.8 if applicable) and/or through verifiable financial need. A panel consisting of the donor will select short-listed candidates. Evidence showing recent volunteer service will be a plus.
Additionally, scholarships and grants may also include but are not limited to sponsoring an entire school, class or individuals, to potentially receive tuition, books, uniform, and transportation. Our ultimate goal is to encourage young Jamaican graduates to stay in the country and make a difference.
Disclaimer Use of the scholarship money from Soraya Amy Jackson Foundation must ONLY be used to cover the cost of tuition and other educational expenses. The awards will be paid directly to the college of acceptance after the awardee presents proof he/she can and will cover the difference in their tuition cost.
