Undergraduate Scholarships

Undergraduate scholarships are usually need based scholarship, bursaries or grants that take academic grades into account, but the primary criterion for qualification is demonstrating financial need. Students who have parents in a lower-middle income bracket may not have the funds to pay for  college, but their parents make too much for them to qualify for government grants and other assistance, which are primarily for students at or below the poverty level, which is a growing situation in this present economy.

There are numerous scholarships, bursaries and Grants available locally through universities, ministries, private entities, community groups, employers and through our database and our sponsors. Not all, but some qualifications for these types of undergraduate scholarships require proof of one’s financial status.

Need-Based Scholarship Basics

Need-based college aid and undergraduate scholarship is awarded based on the student’s family financial need.  The colleges and universities you are applying to for enrollment determine your need by subtracting your expected family contribution (EFC) form the cost of attendance (COA) at each college or university. Simply, the cost of tuition minus the funds you have available to cover enrollment cost.

Merit-Based Undergraduate Scholarship Tips and tactics

Scholarships based on merit – academics or community involvement are also awards that are based on a student’s athletic, academic, artistic or other abilities, and often factor in an applicant’s community service record and extracurricular activities.  The most common merit-based undergraduate scholarships, awarded by either private organizations or directly by a student’s intended college or university, recognize academic achievement in end of year or semester exams or from CXC or GSAT grades or any other regional and local standardized examinations. Every year undergraduate scholarships and bursaries are issued valuing more than J$280 million in merit-based undergraduate scholarships to first year and enrolled students.

Athletic Undergraduate Scholarships Tip

Jamaica has the fastest people in the world! So it is only appropriate for us to have many athletic undergraduate scholarships on offer annually. Colleges offer and administer athletic undergraduate scholarships separately from all other financial aid. Coaches recruit students based on their athletic abilities and the Coaches have the power to select who get the scholarship prizes.  However, all colleges have minimum scholastic requirements for any student athlete, this include a minimum GPA and SAT/ACT score. It should be noted that any student that cannot meet the minimum academic standards of the college won’t get win scholarship.

The minimum standards vary per college, but many average at a 2.5 GPA and 1100 combined SAT score for international enrollment. The minimums at your chosen colleges may be higher (or lower) than the above mentioned.
