Applications are now open for the 2023 Grace Kennedy Foundation (GKF) scholarships. This year, over J$25 million in scholarships will be awarded by GKF to Jamaican students attending the University of the West Indies, the University of Technology and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in the 2023/24 academic year.

“Education is the key to unlocking opportunities and achieving success. Grace Kennedy believes that every student should have the chance to pursue their dreams, regardless of their financial status. We are proud to offer these scholarships to help students achieve their academic goals,” explained Caroline Mahfood, Chief Executive Officer of GKF.

In addition to the scholarships already offered by the Foundation annually, this year, for the first time, a scholarship will be offered in the name of Luis Fred Kennedy, former Governing Director and Chairman of GraceKennedy, and awarded to students studying for a Bachelor of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the Caribbean Maritime University. The new annual Luis Fred Kennedy scholarship will be partially funded by proceeds from sales of Firstborn: The Life of Luis Fred Kennedy, a biography written by his son and Chairman of GKF, Dr Fred Kennedy.

All scholarship recipients who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and fulfil the required volunteer hours, will have their scholarship renewed until they have completed their course of study.



General Terms and Conditions of the Grace Kennedy Scholarships

Successful Grace Kennedy scholarships applicants must be preparing to sit CAPE 2 examinations: The candidate shall have passed not less than four core subjects at the CXC Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) level including Communications Studies/Caribbean Studies held in June the last preceding year (hereafter referred to as the “qualifying examination”).

Students must sit and pass both units of the core subjects. Be a Jamaican citizen. On the first day of June in the year of the qualifying examination the candidate shall not be over the age of nineteen (19) years.

Have completed the application for admission as a full-time student to the University of the West Indies and, at the time of interview, have been accepted for entry.

Be a person of good character, displaying leadership qualities, manifesting creative energy and curiosity and consistent involvement in social/community activities. Have completed and submitted The GraceKennedy/ Jamaica Scholarship application form by June 30.

Have given good and sufficient evidence that the requirements specified in 1 to 6 above have been satisfied.

Scholarship Regulations

Any candidate to whom this Grace Kennedy scholarships are awarded shall not simultaneously hold: – Any other substantial award; orAny award which would interfere with the regulations governing this Scholarship.

The scholarship is valued at JA$550,000.00/annum (varies for some awards) for a maximum period of three (3) consecutive years. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide proof of how the balance of the tuition will be paid if the value of the Scholarship does not cover tuition.

The award is subject to an annual review of the holder’s academic performance and completion of volunteer hours. The Scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the offer of the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

With respect to The GraceKennedy/Jamaica Scholarship, the following shall apply: The holder of the Scholarship is required to pursue the course of study for which the award is granted. An alteration of that course of study may not be made without the Donor’s prior approval and failure to comply with this may lead to the withdrawal of the Scholarship.

The holder of the Scholarship is required to complete forty (40) volunteer hours until final year, where it will be reduced to thirty (30) volunteer hours. In the final year, 50% of the scholarship will be paid in Semester 1.

The holder of the Grace Kennedy scholarships are required to complete 30 volunteer hours by January 15 and adhere to the rules and requirements for the volunteer programme in order to receive the balance of the scholarship funds for Semester 2.

The holder is required to adhere to the rules and requirements for the volunteer programme in order to have the scholarship renewed annually.

The holder of the Grace Kennedy scholarships are required to act as a campus representative for the GraceKennedy Group for the duration of the Scholarship.

The holder grants the Donor permission to use and publish any recorded material, photographs and testimonials of the holder for marketing, social media and print, television and other media purposes.

The instalments in which the scholarship will be paid, shall be determined by the Donor at the time of the award. The Donor may make changes to the value and the instalments as a result of any approved alterations in the course of study by the holder.

The Donor shall appoint a selection panel comprising of the following – one representative from the University of the West Indies (or the other qualified colleges) and two representatives from the GraceKennedy Foundation one of whom shall be Chairman of the panel.
