Next Move Jamaica International (NMJI) Awards J$400K in Scholarships

Next Move Jamaica International, Inc. (NMJI) has awarded 24 academic scholarships to students pursuing studies at the secondary to tertiary level at various high schools and universities throughout Jamaica.

The presentations were made at the NMJI annual Scholarships, Volunteerism and Career (SVC) Awards ceremony, held on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the Richmond Academy, 72 Halfway Tree Road, Kingston 10. The 2017 recipients of the SVC Awards by NMJI are as follows:

  1. Vashi A. Mills Achievement Scholarships
  1. Edna Green Open Scholarships
  1. Joyce Ford Newell Achievement Scholarships
  1. Arthur Winzro Parks Scholarships

In his address, Scholarshipjamaica.com CEO and vice president of NMJI, Chris A. Grant, lauded NMJI for providing scholarships to deserving students in Jamaica over the past five (5) years. He further congratulated the scholarships winners and encourages them to be an agent of change, while challenging each recipient to become a scholarship ambassador for the foundation (NMJI).

“This is a great example of doing your part to contribute to an educated nation. Just five (5) years ago NMJI offered the first four (4) scholarships, today 24 students and their families are beneficiaries of scholarships from the foundation,” he said.

The vice president noted that the awards will assist tremendously to advance the educational development of the recipients, some of whom will undoubtedly be among the next generation of leaders in Jamaica.

President and co-founder of NMJI, Lisa Atkins, said the foundation is pleased to assist in furthering the education and career development of these worthy students and their families. She further implores the recipients to be more proactive in volunteering in their communities and through applying for scholarship opportunities.

“This is our way of giving back to Jamaica and the communities where we are from, by offering these scholarships to high school and college-bound students from all the counties of Jamaica,” she said.

Various NMJI Awards

This year’s scholarships were awarded to students specializing in Fashion Design, Communication and Literature, Nursing, Entrepreneurship, Computer Science, Engineering and open awards to non-specific specialization from the Edna Green Open Scholarship Programme. Additionally, two awards, the Joyce Ford-Newell Achievement Scholarship was open to students living or attending school in St. Thomas. Manchester was also targeted by the Vashti A. Mills Achievement Scholarship Programme.

Founded in 2012, Next Move Jamaica International, Inc. empowers Jamaican families with the knowledge and resources to successfully complete a higher education, while providing scholarships, bursaries, school supplies, resume and interview preparations and support services to as many exceptional Jamaican students as possible.

NMJI strives to make college and university education a top priority for every Jamaican family, mobilizing our community to proactively advance that goal – each individual, in every way we can. NMJI seeks to give its Scholars all the tools they need to do well in their course work, graduate, enter a profession, excel, help lead our nation going forward, and mentor the generations to come. 

As a New York State based registered not-for-profit organization supporting higher education in Jamaica, the Next Move Jamaica International foundation has awarded over JM$4.7million in scholarships, school supplies and provides a range of ancillary programs for students, NMJI Scholars, and parents. 

To date, the foundation has provided more than US$10,000 to students in Jamaica. For this year’s award, a total of J$400,000 was distributed to the 24 NMJI’s SVC Awards recipients, which is an increase of J$150,000 from last year.
