About the donor
Vashti A. Mills is a Manchester-born Jamaican currently residing in the United States, having emigrated more than 30 years ago. She maintains close ties to her birth home, spending significant time in the country each year. Vashti is the very embodiment of hard work, dedication to service, and an unwavering devotion to her faith.
Through all of her hard work and devotion to others, Vashti has instilled in her children and her many grandchildren the need to advance through educational achievement. Academic excellence, a passion for helping the community at large and commitment to the tenets of her faith are the main driving forces behind all that she does. Through this scholarship, it is our hope that we will continue to assist others the way that Vashti would.
This award has been established in her honor and is sponsored by her grandson, Ricardo A. Salmon, Esq., and her family.

How to apply for the Vashti A. Mills Achievement Scholarships
Eligibility: Jamaican Nationals enrolled or who will be enrolled as first year (freshman) students in any local University or College.
Applicants must submit a comprehensive essay of no more than 500 words on the scholarship topic outlined below via email to NMJScholarships@gmail.com.
Students will be selected for the Vashti A. Mills Achievement scholarship based on several key components:
- Completed application forms with the following documents attached:
- Comprehensive essay responses to the questions below indicating the essay
- Two (2) letters of recommendation, one (1) from a current or past teacher, and one from a principal
- High School Transcript
- Provide any test scores, such as your official CXC, GSAT, or other academic measures
- A current resume
Applicants must submit a comprehensive essay of no more than 500 words on the following topic via email to NMJScholarships@gmail.com.
How does an understanding of history dictate your immediate future? What changes do your believe Jamaica needs to undergo in order for you to achieve your future goals?
Awards will be based on academic performance in end of term exams (at least a GPA of 2.8 if applicable) and/or through demonstrated financial need. A panel consisting of the donor and his/her representatives will select from a short-list of candidates. Evidence of recent volunteer service will be a plus
Additionally, scholarship awards may also include, but are not limited to, sponsoring an entire school, class or individuals; tuition reimbursement; and awards for books, uniforms, and transportation. Our ultimate goal is to encourage young Jamaican graduates to stay in the country and make a difference.
Next Move Jamaica International, Inc., a not-for-profit New York State registered 501 (c) 3 foundation is pleased to announce this annual scholarship program with the Vashti A. Mills Achievement Scholarship for college students in Jamaica.
Founded in 2012, Next Move Jamaica International, Inc. empowers Jamaican families with the knowledge and resources to successfully complete higher education, while providing scholarships, bursaries, school supplies, resume and interview preparations and support services to as many Scholarships recipients as possible.
Use of scholarship award from the Vashti A. Mills Achievement Scholarship must ONLY be used to cover the cost of tuition and/or other educational expenses. The awards will be paid directly to the college of acceptance after the awardee presents proof he/she can and will cover the difference in their tuition cost.
