Chevening Awardees: Thirteen Jamaicans have been awarded the 2024 Chevening Scholarships to pursue master’s degrees in the United Kingdom (UK).

Chevening is offered by the UK Government and gives future leaders, influencers and decision-makers from all over the world the opportunity to develop professionally and academically, network extensively and experience UK culture.

This year’s Chevening awardees are Leneka Rhoden, Sayeed Bernard, Nathanael Amore, Anthony McKenzie, Toni-Ann Taylor, Janielle McKoy, Jomarie Malcolm Gordon, Tajay Grant, Renee McDonald, Sonya Murray, Najae Murray, Oluwatomilayo Bewaji Edokpa and Shantal Artwell.

The cohort of scholars will pursue their studies in a variety of fields, including Law, Energy and Climate Change, Entertainment Law, Employment and Human Resource Law, Financial Regulation, Sports and Exercise Biomechanics, Special Education and International Development, Medical Physics, Data Science, Statistics and Brand Management.

Speaking at the Chevening awardees Farewell reception on Thursday, British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Judith Slater said: “This year we are proud to be awarding 13 bright and talented young Jamaicans the opportunity to study in the UK for a year on fully-funded Chevening Scholarships. These remarkable individuals have been chosen from a highly competitive group.

The British High Commissioner said Chevening remains the British government’s flagship scholarship programme for nurturing global leaders, noting there are currently approximately 60,000 Chevening scholars around the world, 310 of whom are Jamaicans.

“One of the key objectives of Chevening is to ensure that the recipients of the award undertake studies in subjects which are going to enable them when they [return] to give back and help their country of origin to prosper,” she said.

Jamaica National (JN) Foundation has partnered with the Chevening scholarship programme to match funding of a scholarship over the next two years, creating the Chevening/JN Oliver F. Clarke scholarship.

”Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith in congratulating the scholars on their achievement encouraged them to be “Ambassadors for Excellence” while overseas.

This year’s batch of scholars will increase the Jamaican alumni of Chevening awardees to over 315 since 1984.

Applications for Chevening Scholarships for the academic year 2025-26 are now being accepted at www.chevening.org. The application period will close in mid-November.
