From Crosswords to Coding: How childhood experience ignited Mikhail McDowell ’s career passion as a future software engineer at UTECH — Ruth Cummings, vice president, channel management and underwriting, Advantage General Insurance Company, makes a presentation to 2023 Sagicor scholar Mikhail McDowell.

MIKHAIL McDowell, 2023 Sagicor scholar, is an example of what can be achieved by never giving up. Currently a third-year computer science student at University of Technology, Jamaica, the future software engineer hopes to eventually launch his tech start-up that focuses on creating AI-driven solutions for various industries.

Growing up in a single-parent household, McDowell always felt inspired to solve challenges.

“Throughout my childhood I had a natural inclination for problem-solving, often immersing myself in crosswords and puzzles. This passion for tackling challenges laid the foundation for my future interests,” he recounted. “My first encounter with a computer came through my older brother. Our mom had gifted him a modest machine, but he didn’t use it much.

I remember the first time I saw the boot screen and heard the start-up chime – I was mesmerised. Intrigued by this fascinating device, I began to learn the basics through trial and error. Messing around with the computer, I quickly became proficient in navigating the operating system and started understanding simple programming logic.”

Detailing how this passion strengthened as he got older, the future tech entrepreneur spent most of his time learning more about computer programming.

“This self-directed learning allowed me to build a solid foundation in computer science. I enjoyed the process of breaking down complex problems and creating solutions through code, which felt like an extension of the puzzles I loved as a child. When it came time to choose a major for college, the decision was natural. My passion for problem-solving and my deep interest in computers made computer science the perfect fit. I was excited to pursue a field where I could combine my analytical skills with my creativity to develop innovative solutions,” he expressed.

With a burning passion to turn his dreams into reality Mikhail McDowell seized the opportunity to apply for a Sagicor Foundation tertiary scholarship in 2023. Fast-forward a year later, the computer science student detailed how the experience has allowed him to become more actively involved in campus opportunities and pursue additional learning opportunities.

“When I received the scholarship I was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. Being a Sagicor scholar has allowed me to completely focus on my studies without worrying about my financial constraints. It has also boosted my confidence and motivated me to strive for excellence, knowing that an organisation like Sagicor believes in my potential,” he said.

In keeping with Sagicor Foundation’s mandate to positively impact the lives of Jamaicans, scholarships are offered to tertiary students who are clients and children of clients, valued at up to $300,000 towards their tuition fees. The qualified institutions include The University of the West Indies; University of Technology, Jamaica; Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts; Mico University College; Caribbean Maritime University; and Northern Caribbean University.

McDowell shared that receiving the scholarship has also provided him with opportunities to give back to communities through volunteering with the foundation.

“I have been exposed to numerous opportunities. I have had the chance to network with other scholarship recipients and professionals within the Sagicor community, which has expanded my professional network significantly. Additionally, being a Sagicor scholar allows me to participate in community events such as the Sagicor Sigma Run and breast cancer awareness activities,” he said.

For anyone who wants to be a Sagicor scholar in the future the computer enthusiast encourages them to stay true to their passions.

“It’s essential to demonstrate not only academic excellence but also a commitment to making a positive impact in your community. Be proactive in seeking opportunities for personal and professional growth, and don’t be afraid to showcase your unique strengths and achievements in your application. Most importantly, believe in yourself and stay dedicated to your goals. Once you think it is attainable, then it very well can be,” he said.
