Rafael Diaz Scholarship for UWI Business Studies

The Rafael Diaz Scholarship In Business is open to a business student registered in the Faculty of Social Sciences, who has met the entry requirements of the University of the West Indies.

The successfully applicant must qualify under the terms and conditions stated below. The following Majors WILL NOT be considered for this scholarship:

Terms and Conditions

All Rafael Diaz Scholarship applicant shall be a Jamaican citizen. On the first day of May in the year of the application, the candidate shall not
be over the age of twenty-three (23) years old.

The applicant must have completed the application for admission as a full-time business student to the University of the West Indies (UWI) and, at the time of interview, have been accepted for entry. He or she must also have a 3.0 GPA average or above.

He or she must be a person of good character, displaying leadership qualities and consistent involvement in social/community activities. The applicant should have completed and submitted The GraceKennedy Rafael Diaz Scholarship application form by July 15.

Applicants must have given good and sufficient evidence that ALL requirements specified above have been satisfied.

Rafael Diaz Scholarship Application Instructions

All supporting documents to be submitted with the application form includes a reference from a Senior Teacher/Principal at the applicant’s High School or a Lecturer from the Faculty of Social Sciences (if currently enrolled in the institution).

Academic Record: Certified copies of CSEC, CAPE & University grades. It is the responsibility of the applicant to submit all outstanding academic grades (CAPE/ Semester grades) received after July 15.

All Rafael Diaz Scholarship applicant must submit a copy of birth certificate and a statement about career goals, leadership abilities, social & community involvement. (not to exceed 250 words)

Regulations

Any candidate to whom this GraceKennedy Rafael Diaz Scholarship is awarded shall not simultaneously hold any other substantial award; or Any award which would interfere with the regulations governing this Scholarship.

The scholarship is valued at JA$400,000.00/annum for a maximum period of three (3) consecutive years. The award is subject to an annual review of the applicant’s academic performance, conduct and participation in social/community activities.

The Rafael Diaz Scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the offer of the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

With respect to The Rafael Diaz Scholarship, the following shall apply:

The holder of this GraceKennedy Scholarship is required to pursue the course of study for which the award is granted. An alteration of that course of study may not be made without the Donor’s prior approval and failure to comply with this may lead to the withdrawal of the Scholarship.

The holder of the GraceKennedy Rafael Diaz Scholarship is required to complete sixty (60) volunteer hours until final year, where it will be reduced to thirty (30) volunteer hours. In the final year, 50% of the scholarship will be paid in Semester 1. The holder of the Scholarship is required to complete 30 volunteer hours by January 15 and adhere to the rules and requirements for the volunteer programme in order to receive the balance of the scholarship funds for Semester 2.

The holder is required to adhere to the rules and requirements for the volunteer programme in order to have the scholarship renewed annually. The holder of the Scholarship is required to act as a campus representative for the GraceKennedy Group for the duration of the Scholarship.

The holder grants the Donor permission to use and publish any recorded material, photographs and testimonials of the holder for marketing, social media and print, television and other media purposes.

The installments in which the Scholarship will be paid, shall be determined by the Donor at the time of the award. The Donor may make changes to the value and the installments as a result of any approved alterations in the course of study by the holder.

The Donor shall appoint a selection panel comprised of the following: one representative from the University of the West Indies, and two representatives from the GraceKennedy Foundation one of whom shall be the Chairman
