The Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) has forged a partnership with the Mokpo National Maritime Korean University  to strengthen its training programmes.

The entities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will boost offerings in logistics, supply chain management, maritime transportation and engineering, customs process, freight forwarding and immigration, through training at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

It will also facilitate staff and student exchanges, joint research with emphasis on doctoral studies, port visits, development of new programmes, among other things.

The agreement, which was signed in July, followed a one- month training programme at the university by two members of the CMI management team in shipping and logistics.

At a press briefing held on Friday (Aug. 4) at the Ministry of Transport and Mining’s Maxfield Avenue offices in Kingston, portfolio Minister, Hon. Mike Henry, welcomed the partnership.

He noted that the agreement will provide opportunities for Jamaican students to study in Korea specialising in areas that will serve to develop the transport sector. He said it will also create job opportunities within the shipping and maritime sectors for logisticians, and marine engineers.

Mr. Henry said the CMI will be exploring other avenues of collaboration in order to strengthen its ability to meet training and educational needs.

The MoU will also make provision for placement opportunities for CMI cadets pursuing marine transportation and marine engineering. As part of the collaboration between the countries, Korean will be offered as a foreign language at the CMI.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Jamaica, Lim Jong Seonto, also expressed pleasure at the arrangement between CMI and the Korean University.

“We are happy for this opportunity to advance relations between Jamaica and Korea with regard to maritime affairs. I believe this collaboration will be mutually fruitful,” he said.

Minister Henry has been invited to speak at the Busan International Port Conference to take place in Korea later this year.
