Sandals LEAP Scholarship
Applications for the Sandals LEAP Scholarship program are now open to applicants until April 30. Students of Northern Caribbean University (NCU), the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), and the University of the West Indies (UWI) have until next month to apply for one of three scholarships and/or one of six customised internships with Sandals Resorts International (SRI) under its Leadership, Excellence and Purpose (LEAP) programme.
The regional resort chain announced last week that the Sandals LEAP scholarship grants total $1 million. The scholarship will be awarded to one student per institution who is an active member of their university’s tourism action club and who have a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0. The criteria also hold for the internships, which come with a monthly stipend and will run for three months.
Application deadline for the Sandals LEAP Scholarship Program is April 30 and for the internships program is April 14. SRI has also introduced an essay competition under LEAP.
“The essay competition invites students to share their thoughts, arguments and recommendations on the subject ‘Reggae Music: Have we lost our way?’ and will be judged on originality, construction, expression, and the creativity and innovation of solutions presented,” Group Manager of Public Relations Sheryl McGaw-Douse told the JamaicaObserver (news source).
Sandals LEAP Scholarship Deadline
The deadlines are as follows:
- LEAP Internship Program us April 14th
- For the essay submissions is April 19.
- Sandals LEAP Scholarship is April 30th
McGaw-Douse stressed that, while applicants must be active members of their university’s tourism action club or society, all three initiatives are open to all students regardless of faculty and area of study.
“Recipients of a Sandals LEAP scholarship or internship will be identified through an application and subsequent interview process and the provision of a non-university character reference.
LEAP was launched late last year with the aim of providing leadership, guidance, motivation and resources to foster development and opportunities among the student population. this was achieved by adopting the student-led tourism organisations at NCU, UTech, and UWI. Since then the programme has engaged not only the student members, but has also provided hands-on interactive sessions with a number of hospitality and tourism lecturers who were given the opportunity to work alongside heads of departments at a Sandals resort. This work relation help these students to gain insights into department operations and to facilitate opportunities to discuss the task of transitioning students from the classroom to the real world of employment.
According to Mark Pike, programmes manager at SRI and initiator of LEAP, “These three initiatives will further seek to engage our tertiary level students no matter their area of study. There remains an abundance of talent within our student population, and whether they study engineering, computing or hospitality and tourism, they all have a part to play in building and sustaining the hospitality industry.”
He maintains that the future of tourism lies in the hands of young people and LEAP is the conduit to ensure that future remains bright.
