The following UWI Nursing scholarships are annual scholarship opportunities (they are offered every year, unless other announcements) for new and returning students of the University of the West Indies School of Nursing at the UWI Mona Campus. It’s important to note that these ARE NOT THE ONLY nursing scholarships that are available at the University of the West Indies.
Other local scholarship donors offer various nursing scholarship based on year of studying, academic qualification and financial need. Additionally, other scholarships can be obtained and used to cover the cost of your nursing degree through nursing scholarships in the “general scholarships” or open scholarships” categories.
The following listed nursing scholarships are mainly offered by the University of the West Indies. We encourage nursing students of other local colleges and universities to contact the scholarship donors and ascertain if these opportunities are open to other tertiary institutions.
Annual UWI Nursing Scholarships
AFUWI Nursing Scholarships

AFUWI Nursing Scholarships Eligibility
The AFUWI UWI Nursing Scholarship awards are available to students registered in the Undergraduate Nursing Degree programme and are nationals of CARICOM countries; Are registered in either the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Science and Technology,Humanities & Education or the Faculty of Social Sciences. Additionally, successful applicants must be entering Level 2 or 3 of their programme of study in the Faculties of Humanities & Education, Science and Technology, Social Sciences;or Level 4 or 5 in the case of Medical Sciences students.
AFUWI Nursing Scholarships Criteria
The AFUWI Nursing Scholarships applicants selection will be based on academic performance based on results of the previous academic year University examinations (at least a GPA of 3.0). Applicants must successfully demonstrable leadership qualities and involvement in co-curricular and/or community-related activities.
Method of Selection
Selection of the AFUWI Nursing Scholarships applicants will be done by UWI officials in accordance with the established practice.
IGL Legacy Nursing Scholarships
Number of Award(s): Two (2).
Value: J$100,000.00
Maximum Tenure: Two (2) years.
IGL Legacy Nursing Scholarships Eligibility
The IGL Legacy Nursing Scholarship awards are available to Jamaican Nationals who are registered in a full-time undergraduate degree programme at the School of Nursing; and have completed at least one academic year of full time study and will continue the degree programme.
IGL Legacy Nursing Scholarships Criteria
The IGL Legacy UWI Nursing Scholarships will be based on strong academic performance at the University level with a minimum GPA of 3.0, verifiable financial need and demonstrable involvement in co-curricular and volunteer activities.
Method of Selection and Special Requirements
Short-listed scholarship application candidates will be interviewed by a selection panel comprised of UWI and Donor representatives. All candidates are required to submit, along with their application form, an essay with the following theme:“What I Hope to Achieve by Becoming a Nurse”
Jamaica Government Exhibition Nursing Scholarships
Number of Award(s): Fifteen (15) per annum
Value: Tuition & contribution towards book grant
Maximum Tenure: Regular duration of specified programme
Eligibility for the Jamaica Government Exhibition Nursing Scholarships
The Jamaica Government Exhibition UWI Nursing Scholarships are open to Jamaican Nationals who are entering Level (Ι) or Level (ΙΙ) of an undergraduate degree programme (not full fee paying) in any Faculty of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Additionally, applicants must not be older than 25 years of age at the start of the academic year for which they are applying.
Scholarship Application Criteria
Successfully nursing scholarship applicants are required to have high academic performance in at least three (3) subjects at CAPE Units Ι and ΙΙ and either Communication or Caribbean Studies; OR have attained at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.30 at Level Ι of the UWI examinations with a verifiable financial need. Applicants must be involved in co-curricular and/or community service activities and possess strong leadership qualities.
Method of Selection and Condition
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from the Ministry of Education, Principal’s Association and the University of the West Indies. Graduates will be required to serve in Jamaica for a minimum period of two years immediately after graduation. The bonding period will be determined by the Ministry of Finance and subject to the amount of money expended.
U.H.W.I. Canadian Nurses’ Association Bursary
Number of Award(s): Two (2)
Value: US$1,000.00 each (J$ equivalent)
Maximum Tenure: One (1) year.
Eligibility for the U.H.W.I. Canadian Nurses’ Association Bursary
The eligibility for the U.H.W.I. Canadian Nurses’ Association nursing bursary is available to Jamaican Nationals who are registered in the BSc. Nursing full-time undergraduate degree programme at the School of Nursing. The successful applicants must be commencing the second year of the nursing degree programme.
Criteria
The eligibility for the U.H.W.I. Canadian Nurses’ Association bursaries will be based on high academic performance at the University level with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and with verifiable financial need.
Method of Selection
Shortlisted scholarship application candidates will be interviewed by a selection panel comprised of UWI School of Nursing representatives.
UWI Academic Bursaries
Value: J$30,000 per annum
UWI Academic Bursaries Eligibility
The UWI Academic Bursaries are available to full-time students from ALL Faculties (including UWI Nursing Scholarships) who are enrolled in either level II or III of the 3-year degree programme OR Years 2, 3 or 4 and are of the M.B.B.S. Programme.
Criteria and Method of Selection
The UWI Academic Bursaries will be based on academic performance based on applicant’s records with special reference to his/her performance in the most recent University Examination . A GPA of at least 3.3 is expected. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel consisting of representatives from the UWI.
UWI Visa Card Scholarship
Number of Award(s): Ten(10) annually.
Value: J$200,000.00
Maximum Tenure: Two (2) years.
UWI Visa Card Scholarship Eligibility
The Visa Card UWI Nursing Scholarship award is available to students registered in an Undergraduate Degree programme and Students from any Faculty (including Nursing students). Students entering Level II or III (Two or Three); in the case of Medical Sciences Level IV or V (Four or Five) of their programme of study.
Application Criteria for the UWI Visa Card Scholarship
The UWI Visa Card UWI Nursing Scholarship award will be based on performance based on the previous academic years’ UWI examinations (GPA of at least 3.0); Involvement in co-curricular or community activities. Successful applicants must show verifiable financial need and demonstrable leadership potential.
Method of Selection and Special Requirements
Short-listed scholarship application candidates will be interviewed by a panel comprised of University personnel. The successful applicants will be required to do 50 hours of voluntary service.
WIGUT Bursaries (OFFERED BY THE WEST INDIES GROUP OF UNIVERSITY TEACHERS, JAMAICA (WIGUT))
Number of Award(s): To be decided by the Donor.
Value: $40,000 per annum
Maximum Tenure:Two (2) years (students in the MB,BS degree programme may be granted extended tenure)
Eligibility for the WIGUT Bursaries
The WIGUT Bursaries are available to Jamaican Nationals who are pursuing studies on the Mona Campus leading to a first degree in any faculty and who entering the Level II or Level III of the degree programme.
WIGUT Bursaries Criteria
The WIGUT Bursaries will be based on high academic achievement in the annual University Examinations (at least a GPA of 3.3) and demonstrable financial need.
Method of Selection
Short-listed WIGUT Bursaries (UWI Nursing Scholarships) application candidates will be selected by a panel comprising personnel from the University and the WIGUT (Jamaica).
Mildred Marshall Bursary
Number of Awards: 1 award annually; if no award given one year then two awards may be given the ensuing year.
Value: $15 000
Mildred Marshall Bursary Eligibility
Successful Mildred Marshall Bursary applicants must be full time student who are Jamaican National or from another CARICOM country if there is no eligible Jamaica national. Successful applicants must be pursuing the BScN – generic or post RN- in the UWI School of Nursing Mona, (UWISON) preferably in second or third year of study
Mildred Marshall Bursary Criteria
Applicants of the Mildred Marshall Bursary (UWI Nursing Scholarships) for nursing students must show financial need, have a good academic and clinical performance in programme. Additionally, applicants must have an active co-curricular engagement(s) (generic programme) OR active membership/participation in national professional organization (Post RN) and recipient expected to serve ONE YEAR in Jamaica or respective country on graduation
